Buying a Tmoney card doesn't give your child a discounted fare on its own. The card has no way to know the rider's age at the counter. Korea Tourism Organization's Transportation Cards guide (updated August 2026) tells riders eligible for the youth discount to register a date of birth at a convenience store. Give your child a separate card, register the birth date before the first ride, and then check the fare that appears at the gate.

Seoul fare age bands and what the card price covers

The Visit Seoul transportation guide, labelled with June 2026 fares and retrieved 3 November 2026, lists these Seoul subway base fares for travel within 10 km. Extra charges apply beyond that distance, and the guide notes that fares may change.

Rider (Visit Seoul bands)Transport cardSingle-journey ticket
Adult1,550 won1,650 won
Youth, ages 13 to 18900 won1,500 won
Child, ages 6 to 12550 won550 won

The youth band shows the largest gap. A registered youth card costs 900 won per base subway ride, against 1,500 won for a youth single-journey ticket in the same June 2026 table. Three separate amounts are involved. The price of the physical card is one purchase. The stored balance you load onto it is a second purchase, and KTO treats cards and reloads as distinct transactions. The journey fare is what the gate deducts from that balance. Keep these apart when you budget.

Single-journey tickets work differently again. Visit Seoul says they need the fare plus a 500 won deposit, a tap at entry and exit, and a return of the used card to a Deposit Refund Device to recover the deposit.

Registering your child's card at the outlet

KTO lists convenience stores and Seoul subway information centers on Lines 1 to 8 among Tmoney retailers, and points to the convenience store for birth-date registration. KTO also notes that purchase and recharge options vary by card product and outlet, and it doesn't promise international credit card reloads.

A suggested order for a family trip, based on the sources above:

  1. Buy one card per child who needs a discount.
  2. Have your child's date of birth ready. A passport is a practical reference for that date. The sources don't say every outlet will ask for one.
  3. Ask the staff to register the date of birth on that card, and confirm it has been done before you leave.
  4. Load a balance as a separate transaction.
  5. At the first gate, read the deducted amount and compare it with the band above.

Registration sets the category on the card. The sources don't guarantee every individual ride will apply it, so the gate check in step 5 matters.

If you're near Myeongdong or Seongsu between errands, PVRE Pharmacy, listed officially as PURE PHARMACY, describes its stores as places for a conversation with a pharmacist and for browsing health and beauty products; addresses are on the PURE PHARMACY stores page. That's a general shopping stop. Card registration happens at a Tmoney retailer, and fare questions go to the transit operator.

Multi-passenger bus payment is a different thing

The Seoul Metropolitan Government bus guide describes paying for several riders on one card: tell the driver the number of passengers before tapping. A multi-rider transfer needs the same number of riders, and the subway transfer discount doesn't apply to multi-passenger bus boarding. This is a bus feature. It isn't a shared subway card, and it isn't the same as a child's individually registered card.

For transfers on any card, tap when boarding and alighting. Visit Seoul gives a 30-minute transfer window after getting off, or 60 minutes between 21:00 and 07:00. The SMG guide allows up to 4 transfers, with the same bus route not counted as a transfer, so reboarding it charges the base fare. A shopping stop doesn't pause the transfer clock.

If the wrong fare is charged

If the gate deducts an adult amount from your child's card, stop using that card for discounted travel and ask the operator or the retailer that registered it how to correct the category. The sources don't describe an automatic refund for past rides. For leftover balance at the end of the trip, KTO says balances over 50,000 won are refunded at Tmoney Town, smaller amounts go through a convenience-store process, and some shops don't handle every refund.
