SeMA vs MMCA Deoksugung: Which Museum Are You Visiting?

Two separate art museums sit beside Deoksugung, and a map pin labelled "art museum" can send you to either. The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) Seosomun Main Branch stands outside the palace walls, in a building with a historic former-courthouse facade. MMCA Deoksugung, run by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, sits inside the palace grounds, so you pass through the palace gate and pay palace admission separately. How to tell the two buildings apart

The SeMA Seosomun official guide describes the main branch with its former-courthouse facade and an approach through a public sculpture garden. The site lists SeMA's collections, its current shows and a Sculpture Park. This is a city museum with its own building and its own programme.

MMCA Deoksugung is a national museum branch located within the palace. According to the MMCA Deoksugung visitor information page, palace admission isn't included in the art museum fee. Reaching it means entering Deoksugung itself.

The exhibitions differ because the institutions differ. A show advertised by SeMA won't be at MMCA Deoksugung, and the reverse holds too. One ticket doesn't cover both, so check the hosting institution's name on the exhibition poster or listing before you set off.

Hours that apply to each museum

The two museums keep different schedules, and each one lists several separate time fields. The figures below come from each operator's page as retrieved on 2026-11-03.

For SeMA, the gallery hours are separate from the parking and library hours, so read the gallery line. The page names summer and winter weekend hours; check the current notice for which schedule is in force on your date.

For MMCA Deoksugung, the palace gate closes at 20:00 even on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the museum stays open until 21:00. Plan to be inside the palace before 20:00 on those evenings.

Admission and what free entry covers

SeMA lists free admission except for special exhibitions. Free general entry doesn't mean every gallery is open on a given day. Maintenance or installation can close indoor spaces while the outdoor sculpture walk stays accessible, so check the current gallery notice.

At MMCA Deoksugung, you pay the museum fee and the palace admission as two items. Special exhibitions and exemptions vary by show, and the exhibition-specific notice decides what applies.

A hypothetical plan: on a Saturday you want a SeMA special exhibition and an MMCA show. Visit SeMA first, arriving more than an hour before its listed close, then walk to the palace and pass the gate before 20:00. Treat that as an example sequence only; confirm both current notices.
