A hop-on city tour bus in Seoul can replace ordinary transit only for the stretch of your day where your shopping stops sit on that operator's own course and you finish before its final boarding. Outside that course, you're back on the subway or city buses. City buses take a transport card. The subway takes a transport card or a single-journey ticket, and that single-journey ticket is a subway ticket, so it won't board a city bus. Treat the tour ticket as a sightseeing loop with stops. It works as a shopping shuttle only when the route sequence matches your list.
A tour ticket and a transport card cover different networks
Seoul has several commercial city-tour operators. Each sells its own ticket for its own course from its own departure point. One of them is Yellow Balloon City Bus, which departs from DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza). Its official FAQ (retrieved 2026-11-03) says a day ticket permits repeated hop-on and hop-off at stops on its course that day. That rule belongs to Yellow Balloon alone. Tiger Bus and other operators publish their own terms, so read each operator's page before you buy.
Ordinary transit is a separate system. The Visit Seoul transportation guide (retrieved 2026-11-03) lists fares labelled June 2026. Under those fares, an adult subway ride costs a base 1,550 won with a transport card and 1,650 won with a single-journey ticket, for trips within 10 km, with extra charges beyond. The same guide notes fares may change.
The two systems meet at payment only. The Yellow Balloon FAQ lists Tmoney as one way to pay when you buy its tour ticket. Paying that way buys a Yellow Balloon ticket; the Tmoney card itself stays a transit card and doesn't become a sightseeing pass. Likewise, a Yellow Balloon ticket doesn't load onto your transport card or cover subway and city bus rides.
What the Yellow Balloon FAQ says about boarding
The Yellow Balloon FAQ sets out these points for its own service:
- If you buy online, exchange the voucher at its ticket booth. Tickets are also sold at the booth and on the bus.
- Seats are first come, first served. If a bus is full, you wait for another one.
- Heavy rain, heavy snow or a typhoon may interrupt operation.
- Check the current route timetable and final boarding time before building an itinerary.
- The night tour isn't the same hop-on product as the day ticket.
The FAQ also contains older route descriptions. Confirm the current stop list on the operator's site on the day you plan to ride.
How to decide for a shopping day
This section is our suggested way to organise the day, based on the rules above. It isn't operator guidance.
Write your shopping stops in the order you plan to visit them. Then lay the tour route's stop sequence beside that list. Count how many of your stops match a tour stop, and note the final boarding time. If two or three stops line up and you'll be done before the last bus, the loop can carry you while you see sights between purchases. If your stops sit off the course or jump back and forth across the city, choose point-to-point transit. A loop only moves in one direction.
Time spent off the bus also matters. Every hour browsing pushes you closer to final boarding, and a full bus at your stop adds waiting time. Keep a transport card topped up as a fallback for weather interruptions or a missed last bus. The Visit Seoul guide says a bus/subway transfer counts when you tap on boarding and alighting and board again within 30 minutes of getting off (60 minutes between 21:00 and 07:00). A long shopping stop doesn't pause that clock, so a fresh fare applies after a long browse.
If one stop on your list is a general health-and-beauty browse with the option of a pharmacist conversation, PVRE Pharmacy (listed as PURE PHARMACY) has stores in Myeongdong at 서울특별시 중구 명동8길 41 and in Seongsu at 서울특별시 성동구 성수이로20길 3; the store locator gives map links. Check how you'll reach either address by transit, since this article makes no claim that a tour route stops there. A pharmacist conversation covers general medicine and health questions; travel, customs or medical diagnostic questions go to the relevant authority or your own doctor.
