Korean won cash won't get you onto every Seoul city bus. The official Visit Seoul city bus guide (retrieved 2026-11-03) notes that cashless routes expanded from March 1, 2023, and it directs riders to transport cards. The decision to make is this: buy and load a physical transport card before you stand at the stop. Treat cash as a backup that some routes may refuse.

Why cash alone is a gamble in Seoul

Visit Seoul states that city buses aren't all cash-accepting. The page gives no current count or percentage of cashless buses, and this article doesn't estimate one. So the only dependable check is current route or operator information for the specific bus you plan to take, read before boarding. Showing cash to the driver doesn't establish acceptance, and there's no published driver workaround for a rider who arrives at a cashless bus with only notes and coins.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government's bus guide (retrieved 2026-11-03) describes the city bus categories and route numbering. It also sets out card-based rules, which is a further reason to carry a card:

  • Tap your card again when you get off.
  • Transfers count within 30 minutes of alighting.
  • Up to 4 transfers apply within a 5-ride journey. The transfer benefit has conditions: a higher base fare or distance charges can still apply, so check the SMG guide for your combination of routes.
  • Reboarding the same bus or the same route charges the base fare again.
  • For a group on one card, tell the driver the number of passengers before paying. A multi-rider transfer needs the same number of riders, and the subway transfer discount doesn't apply to multi-passenger bus boarding.

These rules apply to Seoul city buses as described by the city government. They aren't a guide to buses in other Korean cities.

Preparing a card before you wait at the stop

Keep three costs separate. The card purchase is one cost. The stored balance you reload is a second. The fare deducted at each tap is the third. Visit Seoul lists convenience stores, subway stations and ticket machines as purchase and recharge points. A suggested order for a trip (this is an organizing tip, not an official rule):

  1. Buy the card at a convenience store or subway station on arrival.
  2. Load enough balance for your planned rides plus a margin for detours.
  3. Check the route number of your bus at the stop or in current operator information.
  4. Keep the card separate from other contactless cards so the reader picks up the right one.

Hypothetical example: if you plan four bus rides a day for three days, load enough for twelve fares plus a buffer, using the fare shown by the operator at the time. Fare age bands are on the Visit Seoul page, so check your band there.

Visit Seoul links the Tmoney Pay app. That link doesn't confirm the app will set up on your phone's operating system or work with an overseas account. Neither source confirms that a foreign bank card's contactless function works on Seoul buses. Carry the physical card even if you plan to try a phone option.

If you're stuck without accepted payment

At a convenience store or station, ask where you can buy or recharge a transport card. Then return to the stop or pick an alternative route you've already noted, such as the subway line closest to your destination. Save that alternative before you leave your accommodation. Airport limousine buses are a separate product from city buses, so their payment terms don't tell you anything about city routes.

If you pass through Myeongdong or Seongsu while sorting out errands, PVRE Pharmacy, listed on its official store page as PURE PHARMACY at 서울특별시 중구 명동8길 41 and 서울특별시 성동구 성수이로20길 3, is an optional stop for health and beauty shopping and a general conversation with a pharmacist. The store page doesn't mention transport cards, recharging or transit help. For those, use a convenience store or subway station.
